Comments : This is a spectacular natural blue topaz from the O'Briens Creek fields near Mt Surprise. It has a very nice light blue colour that is natural and not caused by artifical heating or irradiation. The design is very modern, flashy and eye catching. These natural blues are one of my favorite stones to cut and the finished gem is almost indistinguishable from aquamarine and have an elegance that is theirs alone. This is a very unique piece of gem art!

Stone : Topaz
Cut By : Doug Menadue, 2008
Item : #83
Design : Crusader's Shield (with Cross) (Fred Van Sant)
Origin : O'Briens' Creek, Mt Surprise, North Queensland, Australia
Treatments : None
Weight : 5.44 carats
Clarity : Eye Clean, 5/5
Size : 11mm X 10mm X 7mm
Price : $360 AUD
Comments : For those of a religious nature, this gemstone might interest you. It is cut in a design which, as the name suggests, resembles a crusader's shield. On the front (crown) of the gemstone is a "frosted" cross. This corresponds to the front of the shield where a cross would normally be painted. In one of the photos I have outlined the cross so that it can clearly be seen. It would make a special gift for someone and a lovely ring or pendant. It is cut in clear O'Briens Creek topaz.

Design : Dodecahedron (Jeff Ford)
Origin : O'Briens' Creek, Mt Surprise, North Queensland, Australia
Treatments : None
Weight : 8.94 carats
Clarity : Eye Clean, 5/5
Size : 11mm
Price : $295 AUD
Comments : Now for something a little bit different. This is one in a series of platonic and archimedean solids that I am planning to cut. Not really sure that it could be used in jewellery, its more as a curiousity. For those of a spiritual metaphysical mind, it could perhaps be used in various meditations or some other similar exercise. I could see for example how if one was to meditation laying on their back, the dodecahedron could be placed on the third eye. I have noticed various cheap platonic solid sets for sale out there but they are mass produced, very inaccurate and the quality of the rock they are cut from is not the best. This dodecahedron is precision cut in clear O'Briens Creek topaz.

Comments : Okay folks, this is something special. This is a real collector's gemstone, especially if you are into collecting localities. This gem is a magnificent example of a Mt Surprise / O'Briens Creek topaz. It is eye clean except for a spot the size of a pin-point that is visible using a 10X loupe. It is well cut with lots of action. If you like your gems large, then this is the one for you. It would make a pendant that would stop people in their tracks. There is also a hint of blue in this gemstone.

Stone : Topaz (Natural Blue)
Cut By : Doug Menadue, 2008
Item : #45
Design : Barion Old Mine (Bob Keller)
Origin : O'Briens' Creek, Mt Surprise, North Queensland, Australia
Treatments : None
Weight : 19.48 carats
Clarity : Slightly Included, 4/5
Size : 15mm X 15mm X 11mm
Price : $1414.25 AUD
Comments : This is a wonderful natural blue topaz from the O'Briens Creek fields near Mt Surprise. It has a very nice light blue colour that is natural and not caused by artifical heating or irradiation. The design is a variation on the classic "old mine" style. There are several small "horsetail" needle inclusions which are only just visible face up but do not detract from the overall beauty of the stone. They are interesting in their own right. There is a small minor inclusion veil/flaw (about 0.5mm in area) on the surface of the crown near one edge of the girdle. With the right setting this would be hidden. This gemstone is quite large and collectable. A very nice stone!

Comments : This is an exceptionally clear and sparkling gem. It is a very sweet little stone and will make a beautiful, simple pendant. There is alot of brillance and sparkle in this stone. This one has a particularly nice quality about it and a lovely 'water'. (Note: The excessive black you see in the gem is simply and unfortunately the reflection of my camera. The gem is white and clear.)
